Advertising & Posters

Display of posters in view of any public street is allowed only after written permission has been obtained from the Chief Traffic Officer.
Posters advertising any meeting, function or event of a sporting, educational, charitable or political nature are allowed, as well as the nomination of any person for a parliamentary or municipal election.
Distinction is made between temporary and permanent advertising posters and signs. Temporary posters are those displayed for less that 30 days and are controlled by the Traffic Department.

Temporary Posters:

  • No commercial advertising whatsoever may appear on the posters
  • Posters are to be attached to a rigid backing and may not be larger than 1000 x 1000 mm
  • No more than 50 posters may be displayed, with the following exceptions : an unlimited number of posters is permitted for advertising the candidature or nominations of any person for a parliamentary or election for every constituency, as well as for a municipal election for any municipal ward
  • Posters may not be attached to trees, lamp-posts, traffic lights, electricity meter boxes or any other municipal property
  • Posters may not be erected more than 14 days before the advertised event, and must be removed within three days after the event
  • Churches, schools and welfare organisations will pay a deposit of R1 per poster at the Traffic Department
  • Other organisation will pay a deposit of R300 (refundable after removal of the posters), as well as a further R3 per poster. This is also applicable to posters advertising the sale or lease of property
  • Please note that it is not permitted to place flyers or leaflets under the windscreen wipers of vehicles

Permanent Posters:

  • Written permission must be obtained from the Town Council for the erection of all advertising signs. Applications should be directed to the office of the Chief Town Planner for further processing
