Geographic Information - Centurion In A Nutshell

Strategic Location

Centurion is strategically situated between Johannesburg and Pretoria and its main access routes link it to every important centre in Gauteng. The main railway line also runs through the heart of Centurion, thereby confirming Centurion's role as the urban anchor of Gauteng.

 

Demographics

Centurion is home to a multi-cultural population of 134 000 and it provides jobs to 50 000 people. 20% of Centurion's economically active residents fill managerial posts, whilst 43% pursue a career in the professions. 62% of the residents are economically active.

 

Economic Base

The four chief sectors in Centurion contribute as follow to the job market:

  • Social Services Sector (25%)

 

Retail

Centurion is the mecca of small business and 40% of all businesses in Centurion employ between 1 and 5 employees. 14% of Centurion households operate businesses from their homes. Hawkers in Centurion are well managed, thanks to a newly established Hawkers Forum.

 

Tourism

Centurion has a variety of tourist attractions, including the Irene Camp Cemetery, the popular Smuts House Museum and the Air Force Memorial. The Supersport Centurion cricket stadium is a South African landmark, regularly hosting international matches, whilst Centurion Shopping Centre, Centurion Boulevard and the City Lake offer a wide variety of shops and restaurants.
Twenty four guest houses cater for the discerning overnight visitor's needs, in addition to the local hotels.
Laudium also offers a variety of places of worship which cater for all Eastern religions.

 

Rainfall

Centurion lies within the typical summer rainfall area. Annual rainfall measures 696mm, with November, December and January the months with the highest precipitation.

 

Temperatures

The average maximum temperature is around 27 °C, with a summer minimum of approximately 14 ºC.

Samrand Industrial and Commercial Park

The largest mixed used development of its kind in South Africa.
An area of 560 ha of this 700 ha development will offer the following:
  • 258 ha for light industrial and commercial developments
  • 19 ha for commercial development and offices
  • 38 ha for small industrial and commercial developments
  • 169 ha business and residential golfing estate
  • 70 ha of open spaces
  • 13 ha for businesses
  • a hotel, exhibition facility and 3 filling stations
  • the developers are also subsidizing the erection of a police station
More than R 700 million will be invested over the next five years. The development will be completed in three phases and on completion, just after the turn of the century, 57 000 job opportunities will have been created.

 

Telkom

Telkom has recently launched a R 135 million project to build a national network management centre (NNMC) and information technology (IT) data centre in Centurion. This high technology centre will form part of the Tecnopark development. The NNMC would be a central hub for monitoring their entire telecommunications network on a 24 hour basis. Construction of the two buildings has begun, and is scheduled for completion in April 1999.

 

Cornwall Hill Development

Developed by EG Chapman (they are both the agents and marketers) and Kroon Sons. Consists of 275 one hectare plots and 360 x 800 m² - 2000 m² stands in a separate village, with a private school for 1400 pupils.

 

Centurion Country Club

Situated in Highveld Extension 7. Developed by EG Chapman (they are also the agents and marketers) and Kroon Sons.
Consists of 566 stands which verge on a championship golf course.
60% of the buyers are from the Johannesburg area.

 

Mabopane/Centurion Corridor

Initiated by the Greater Pretoria Metropolitan Council and financed by the Department of Transport.
Developed by a consortium of consultants led by Urban Econ.
The project's purpose is to unlock the economic potential of the north-western sector of Pretoria and to create an access link between the western part of Greater Pretoria and the rest of Gauteng.
