Refuse Removal

Refuse Removal

The Town Council wishes to promote the clean and tidy appearance of the town, and relies on the friendly co-operation of residents.
Enquiries: Tel. 671 7295
Office hours Monday to Friday from 07:45 to 16:00

Domestic Refuse:

Domestic refuse represents refuse which has been discarded as a result of domestic activities. This refuse should be placed in the appropriate refuse bins which will be periodically emptied by the Council at a prescribed tariff. This cost is added monthly to residents' water and electricity accounts

Other Refuse:

This implies refuse which can not be regarded as domestic or garden refuse, such as large tins, boards, iron, large branches, tree trunks, old motor parts, cardboard boxes, etc. The removal of this kind of refuse is also undertaken by the Council and will be debited to the water and electricity account.

Please note: Soil, rocks, bricks, sand and building rubble are not included in any of the above-mentioned categories, and are not removed by the Council. Arrangements for the removal of this kind of refuse must be made with a private contractor. Alternatively, a 6m3 container can be rented from the Council - any kind of refuse may be placed in such a container, and the cost of this rental will be added to the water and electricity account.

Refuse Depositing Site:

The Council no longer has an 'open' depositing site at its disposal, but residents can deposit refuse at Waste Tech's dumping grounds in Midrand. (Also see mini-depositing sites)

Cleaning up empty stands:

Owners of empty stands can apply to the Council to have such stands cleaned up. Residents should however note that if a stand is not cleaned up after a notice has been sent to the owner, the Council's contractor will clean the stand, the cost for which will be recovered from the owner.

All complaints in this regard should be directed to the Health Services Department at Tel: 671 7280. To have open municipal erven cleared or cleaned up, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at Tel: 671 7676.

Domestic refuse is removed once a week from the garden gate.

Please note the following:

  • All refuse bags are to be placed out before 07:00 on the collection day

  • Bags should be tied securely to ensure easy and clean handling
  • Residents who are guilty of littering and purposeful interference with refuse removal will be prosecuted
  • Residents are kindly requested not to place refuse bags on top of miniature sub-stations, distribution kiosks or meter boxes, as liquid in refuse bags may damage the paint on this equipment

  • Refuse bins and plastic bags can be purchased from the Health Department, corner of Basden Avenue and Rabie Street, and also at the main library and branch libraries.
